Key Lessons Learned and Industry Actions as a result of the accident at Fukushima Dai-ichi

On March 11, 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent 45-foot tsunami hit northeastern Japan resulting in more than 15,000 deaths and widespread damage, especially to coastal areas that will be forever changed by the event. The event also initiated an International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES) Level 7 accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear site. Andrew will discuss the progression of the accident at Fukushima Dai-ichi and will describe the key lessons learned and industry actions that are being implemented to improve nuclear plant safety in the United State and throughout the world.

Distinguished Speaker, Andrew Detar 

Andrew Detar is a mechanical engineer with Westinghouse Electric Company. Andrew has spent the majority of his career in the safety analysis area where he analyzes the thermal-hydraulic response to postulated accidents that could occur at a nuclear power plant. He is a 2005 graduate of Penn State Behrend and a registered Professional Engineer.
