Mercantile Building
In February 2006, the Erie Redevelopment Authority acquired the 5-story 49,000 square foot Mercantile Building through the Blighted Property Reclamation process. Redevelopment of the building followed in cooperation with the City's Department of Economic and Community Development and Weber Murphy Fox architects. The building utilizes innovative construction techniques and materials optimal for sound insulation and efficiency.
Logistics Plus
Logistics Plus, established in 1996 to manage freight logistics for GE Transportation Systems, has grown into a business with more than 300 customers, managing over $300 million in global freight for small, medium, and large sized companies. Its business includes the process of planning, implementing and controlling efficient, cost-effective flow of raw materials, in-process inventory, finished goods and related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption for the purpose of conforming to customer requirements.
Studio Tour
Northwestern PA's CBS affiliate, WSEE, NBC affiliate WICU, and CW Network affiliate consolidated their Erie operations on March 1, 2009 at the upper State Street studio building in Erie. The current studio building is believed to be the oldest continuously operating television studio facility in the United States. All three network affiliates are operated by Lilly Boradcasting, Inc. and utilize state of the art digital broadcasting and media technologies.

Take I-90 to I-79 North.
In Erie, I-79 North becomes Bayfront Highway. Continue on Bayfront Highway along Erie's Bayfront to intersection of Bayfront Higway and State Street. Turn RIGHT (South/uphill) on to State Street.
Continue South on State Street to intersection of State & 14th Streets. Mercantile Building is on the left (East) side of the street at 1401 State Street.
Parking is available in guest lot immediately behind Mercantile Building and is also free along State Street after 6PM.
To WSEE/WICU Studios
(Group will travel together from Mercantile Building)
From Mercantile Building, contiue 1.3 miles South (uphill) on State Street to 3514 State Street. Watch for large broadcasting tower on your right.
Established in 1940, the Northwest PA Chapter of ASM serves the information and networking needs of professionals in material sciences, manufacturing and higher education. Our chapter serves Erie, Crawford, Warren, Venango, Forrest, Elk, Cameron, along with portions of Jefferson and Clearfield counties in Pennsylvania, and Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties in New York.

ASM April 2010 Meeting
ASM members and guests attended the April 2010 presentation given by Pennsylvania General Energy (PGE) Geologist Damian Piaschyk at the Warren Holiday Inn on Thursday, April 22nd. The presentation included an overview Pennsylvania General Energy, an oil and gas production company headquartered in Warren, PA. The permitting, equipment, costs and resources required to drill a horizontal Marcellus Shale well were discussed. The hydrofracturing process required to break open the low permeability black shale was explained.
While our natural resources in the Marcellus Shale are estimated to be extremely vast, many environmental issues and concerns surround this new drilling process. It was a very informative presentation that covered a topic receiving attention in our state.
A big thanks to Bill Bennett for coordinating our speakers and accommodations.
A special thanks to Damian Piaschyk and PGE for making the April ASM meeting a successful event!

2010 Student Night Event at Penn State Behrend

On Thursday March 25th, the chapter hosted its annual student night event at Penn State Behrend. Representatives from the Northwest Commission, Ben Franklin Technology Partners, the Plastics Technology Council, and PENNTAP made short presentations describing various business and networking opportunities available to the students and business community. Following these presentations, Mr. Bryan Buck, a manufacturing and environmental engineer at Ellwood National Forge in Irvine, PA, gave the keynote address. Bryan, a 2008 graduate of Penn State Behrend with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology and native of North East, PA, recounted his experiences in transitioning from college to the workforce. In describing this transition, Bryan mentioned that taking steps like participating in an internship, attending career fairs, and seeking the advice of career services all contributed to his success in finding a job immediately upon graduating from college. He also described some of the valuable lessons he learned upon starting his career. Overall, Bryan gave an informative presentation recounting his experiences that the students found very helpful. We thank Bryan for his efforts along with the rest of the presenters for their time in presenting at this event. We also thank Don Marteeny for doing an excellent job in his first year as Student Night Coordinator!
Justin DiPenti
Justin is a senior in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Justin hails from Scandia, PA (north of Warren) where, as a child, he developed an interest in machines, particularly go-karts. This interest eventually led him to pursue the engineering degree at PSU Behrend where he also participates in the track and field and cross country teams.
Steven Miller
Steven Miller, pictured on the right above, is a junior in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Steve hails from Union City, PA (south of Erie) where he developed an interest in science as a high school student. This interest and his love for baseball led him to PSU Behrend where he is part of the baseball team and pursuing his engineering degree. Congratulations to both of this year’s ASM International NW Pennsylvania Chapter Scholarship recipients.
